What's keeping you stuck?
I got in my car the other day and was ready to drive off, but it didn’t want to move.
There was a crunching sound and some resistance.
I’m not new to driving, and while I’m no car expert, I’m pretty good with the basics.
After assuming the worst and some confusion about what was wrong, I realised I’d left the handbrake on.
My mind was racing in so many different directions I hadn’t noticed what was keeping me stuck.
When we want to make a big life change, it can help to slow down and check the basics.
What’s keeping us stuck from moving forward before we even decide our direction of travel.
If you or someone you know are procrastinating or hiding away from thinking about retiring and what comes next, doing nothing is a choice and will keep you stuck.
Don’t have time to focus on it?
Choose to make it a priority. Start with 10 minutes to ask yourself some questions (see my blog pick one thing to focus on first) and put it in your calendar. Do it and then schedule your next 10 minutes.
Afraid of what comes next?
As Susan Jeffers says in her excellent book, “Feel the fear and do it anyway”. You can’t shape what comes next if you don’t think about and plan it.
Anxious about how others will react to your exploration of retiring?
Get clear yourself on what you do and don’t want and the reasons behind it so you can confidently talk about how you move forward.
Choose one person you trust to be objective and to support you, and share your thoughts and feelings with them.
