Pick one thing to focus on first
As with any big life change, when it feels like there are too many things to think about, decisions to make, emotions feel charged, and a clock is ticking, the retirement life planning box may stay firmly shut and hidden away.
What if we open it a little, and start with one thing to focus on first? To be proactive, start feeling organised and more in control?
Before any of my Second Spring one-to-one consultations or coaching programmes, as part of the booking form, I ask you what your biggest questions or concerns are in planning for retirement.
Which worries or concerns do you relate to?
How and when to exit my current job
Finding flexible or part-time work
What I’ll do that brings meaning to my life or makes me feel happy
Having sufficient funds to fund my lifestyle
Where I’ll live (physical home and/or location)
Being lonely or feeling isolated
Setting boundaries for my time
How I’ll structure my time and make sure I have a routine
(Anything you feel is missing? Please do let me know)
More than one of these may worry you or are raising questions for your next stage of life.
But most importantly, pick one and do something about it, whether it's the one that worries you most or you have some ideas to address it.
Understand more about what’s going on for you in this area and take a step towards changing the situation.
Think about what’s behind your question or concern, what’s real and what assumptions you are making
Notice how you feel about it and what this could be telling you
Make a list of points to explore if you’re a list person
Have a chat with a partner, friend, family member or colleague, if it helps to talk it through
If you want to work on your questions and concerns more deeply with an objective thought partner to help you be more accountable to yourself and making progress, get in touch for a conversation about how we can work together. www.second-spring.co.uk
