Who will you be in your next stage of life?
Leaving behind a full-time role and, in many cases, a career that has spanned decades, may raise concerns about the fundamental question: “Who will I be in my next stage of life?”
While there may be concerns over a loss of your current identity, preparing for your next stage of life in retirement or semi-retirement is also an opportunity to review and reinvent your identity. For you to check in with yourself on who you are, what’s important to you to retain and what you want to change.
Three questions to ask ourselves about our beliefs and behaviour are:
What is important to me and at the core of who I am?
What do I want to be different in how I treat myself and others?
What haven’t I had enough time for that I want to focus on more?
I propose asking these questions in two parts:
Who do I want to be? Think aspirationally. I will be a person who believes and behaves in a certain way. For example, to be happy, to inspire, to be valued.
Who am I going to be? Taking your answers to the previous question and assigning practical action steps to bring the person you want to be to life. For example, what I can do to make sure that I am happy, that I inspire others, and that I create value.
