Second chances
Have you ever started reading a new book, or started watching a new TV series, and after 5 minutes you give up?
It doesn’t grab your attention or leaves you feeling indifferent.
While I like to think I’m much more patient with people, when it comes to entertainment, my patience is much shorter. And so is my attention span.
This willingness to commit, to try something new, may not be limited to entertainment.
How many times have you tried a new sport, activity, group or club, and given up after one visit, because it didn’t spark something for you?
I’m not suggesting we have to stick at everything we try if it doesn’t move us in some way.
Our time is precious after all.
However, I increasingly experience going back to that book, TV series, or group and realising that I am getting a whole lot from it.
It is worth asking ourselves what made us give up so quickly the first time.
Were we not in the right frame of mind the first-time round?
Was it not the right time in our lives?
Were we stretched too far beyond our comfort zone?
In thinking about our next stage of life, what might we have too hastily moved away from that deserves a second chance?
What book might move or inspire us?
What activity may help us grow our skills and reveal a hidden talent?
What group or club might turn into a lasting community of support?
By returning to something perhaps too quickly passed over, and giving it a second chance, we’re also giving ourselves a second chance to benefit.
