Planning your exit strategy and what comes next
Katie* came to work with me because she was ready to leave full-time work and move into the next stage of her life. She wanted to make sure she had a clear exit strategy and a plan for what came next and needed some help to do it.
As the Director of a non-profit, she had helped it to grow and to have impact and was proud of what she had achieved.
But she felt the push of no longer wanting the full responsibility for the organisation day-to-day, some challenging work relationships, and recognising it was time for others to lead.
And she felt the pull of more independence, the potential to take on other projects or roles that valued her skills and experience, and to dedicate more time to enjoying her personal life, which had often come second.
Through my Explorer Coaching Programme, we focused on achieving clear outcomes in three areas together to be ready to hand in her notice within the next 12 months:
Succession planning
Clarifying what projects and tasks Katie needed to complete in her role before handing over
Reviewing the staffing structure and making sure that the right staff were in place with infrastructure and professional development to support them
Identifying when and how to communicate with the board and staff about her leaving
Becoming an independent consultant
Personal skills, experience, and knowledge audit to identify what services she can offer
Selection criteria for choosing the types of clients as people and organisations to work with
Practical steps for setting up as a consultant, having relevant systems and paperwork in place
Personal life
Prioritising and planning what Katie wants to do immediately after leaving full-time work to decompress
Identifying existing and new projects, classes, and family experiences she wants to make happen
Setting principles to live by to give her the energy and fulfilment she deserves
Work with me to clarify your exit strategy and what comes next.
