Choice instead of control

February 09, 20262 min read

Life often presents us with the unexpected.

As individuals, how much this bothers us may depend on our attitude towards being in control.

While it is not possible to control everything, try as some of us might, we can still choose to understand ourselves and to take action.

In knowing what we want, and what we don’t want, in the next stage of life, we can give ourselves options when we may think we don’t have them.

If you’re struggling with the idea of how to manage your time, connection or wellbeing in retirement, start by asking yourself these questions to give yourself choices.

Aim to write at least 3 responses for each question. Work your way through or start with the section that interests you most.

Time

  • How much time every day or over the course of a week do you want or need for yourself?

  • What do you want or need this time to give you?

  • What boundaries and expectations do you need to set with yourself and others to get or limit this time?

Connection

  • What do you enjoy doing with other people or would like to have company for?

  • Who specifically do you want to spend time with doing these activities?

  • If you want to expand your friendship or relationship circles, what are the characteristics of the people you want to meet and where might you find them?

Wellbeing

  • What do you do that helps you to feel physically well?

  • What do you do that helps you to have good mental health?

  • What external support can you put in place or access to help improve your physical or mental health when you need it?

If you want to have a conversation about how we can work through these and other questions together, moving from reflection to action, get in touch.
